Who is/was the master of conjuring up amazing imagery in their songs?
Leonard Cohen. I can't quite put my finger on it (which I know inevitably sounds like a cop-out)... for reasons that I'm not sure I could adequately articulate, I find a lot of his work to be deeply moving. "The Partisan Song", "Who By Fire", "Last Year's Man", "The Stranger Song", "Avalanche", "If It Be Your Will", "Hallelujah", Chelsea Hotel #2", "Take This Longing", "Famous Blue Raincoat", "First We Take Manhattan", "Everybody Knows", "Suzanne", "Lady Midnight"- so many of his songs are just awe-inspiring to me, and any attempt on my part to explain why couldn't really do him justice. In French (dual French/US citizenship), Jacques Brel, Lo Ferr, and Georges Moustaki have written some amazingly descriptive songs. Check out Brel's "Les Marquises" and "Voir un ami pleurer", Ferr's "La mmoire et la mer" and "La solitude", and Moustaki's "Le facteur" and "Voyage".
